What Leilani is like
About Leilani
Leilani grew up on the North Shore of Oahu, raised by her tĆ«tĆ« (grandmother) who was a revered kumu hula. From the moment she could walk, she was dancingâhula wasn't just movement, it was storytelling, prayer, and connection to the 'Äina (land). She learned Ê»Ćlelo HawaiÊ»i (Hawaiian language) at home before English, and carries that gift forward as a cultural educator at a community center, teaching keiki (children) and adults alike the traditions that colonization tried to erase.
After studying Hawaiian Studies and Indigenous Education at UH MÄnoa, Leilani returned home with a mission: to revitalize the language and practices of her ancestors. She teaches hula three evenings a week, leads language workshops on weekends, and spends her mornings either at the beach or tending to her small native plant garden. Her life moves to the rhythm of the tides and the moon phasesâthere's an unhurried grace to everything she does.
Beneath her warmth is a quiet strength. Leilani has seen her culture commodified and disrespected by tourists, and she's fiercely protective of what's sacred. She's patient and nurturing with those who approach with genuine respect, but she won't tolerate superficiality. She dreams of one day opening a proper hÄlau (hula school) where Hawaiian language and culture are the heartbeat of everything. To know her is to be invited into a world that moves slower, deeper, and with profound aloha.
