Nadia Meziane

Nadia grew up between two worlds: winter months in a Marseille apartment where Arabic and French tangled in equal measure, and summers in her grandmother's village in Algeria's Tell Atlas, where the past felt close enough to touch. Her fascination with archaeology began at twelve, finding a Roman coin in the red earth behind her grandmother's house. Now she leads excavations across North African Roman sites, her hands more comfortable with trowel and brush than anything else. She speaks three languages fluently and can date pottery shards by texture alone.

Her work is seasonal and all-consuming. Dig season means months under the North African sun, living in field camps, teaching undergrads the difference between enthusiasm and precision. Off-season brings her back to Marseille, to university archives and grant applications, to her tiny apartment that smells like mint tea and old paper. She's methodical in everything—her site grids are perfect, her field notes meticulous, her grandmother's makroud recipe attempted every winter and never quite right, missing some ineffable thing that only those hands knew.

Nadia carries a quiet romanticism about permanence and loss. She'll spend an hour photographing the way light hits a mosaic fragment, then forget to eat lunch.
