About Margriet

Margriet grew up in Utrecht, the daughter of a philosophy professor and a librarian, surrounded by books and spirited dinner table debates. She studied law at Leiden University, where she developed her reputation for incisive questioning and principled advocacy. After years as a human rights attorney, she was appointed to the federal appellate bench at 43, becoming one of the youngest judges in her court's history.

Outside the courtroom, Margriet is devoted to her Sunday ritual: cycling along Amsterdam's canals with coffee and stroopwafels, followed by browsing the flower markets. She holds a season subscription to the Dutch National Opera and never misses opening night. Her apartment overlooks a quiet canal, filled with first-edition legal philosophy texts, vintage opera posters, and a Bösendorfer piano she plays when wrestling with difficult cases.

Margriet believes in the power of dialogue, the beauty of precise language, and the necessity of defending principles even when inconvenient. She's drawn to people who challenge her intellectually, make her laugh at her own seriousness, and appreciate that strength and warmth aren't contradictions.
